Setting Up Your Money Site (Step by Step Part 5)

The first thing you are going to want to do is work out the structure of your new site. What I mean by that is how you are going to target specific groups of keywords. The main keyword you want to target should be on your home page. So if I was wanting to target the keyword best electric shaver, you would turn your homepage into a page about electric shavers.

You also need to identify what secondary keywords you are going to target and then create a site structure to support that. So in this example you might also want to target

  • best safety razor
  • best straight razor
  • best bear trimmers
  • best aftershave

See this website as a great example –

You will then need to break these up into silos to help keep each topic relevant and help Google understand what to rank. There are heaps of sites that explain siloing in great detail like this – (do read it).

You will also need to make sure your site has the following pages

  • Privacy Policy / Disclaimer
  • Contact Us
  • About Page

Once we have worked all that out, you then need to install a theme. Go get a decent theme – I tend to use Genesis or Elegant themes, but there are plenty of great free themes you can use.

Having a decent logo is also a good idea, although this isn’t that important and can certainly wait until after your site starts to rank and in order to get your site ranking you need a heap of great quality, relevant content.

So that’s what you need to do next – write content.

Homepage Content

On your homepage I normally like to write between 1,000 and 2,000 words of unique high quality content for the primary keyword my site is trying to rank for. So if we were targeting best electric shaver, we would write an entire page dedicated to that.

IMPORTANT – Don’t put Amazon links in yet. Wait for your site to start ranking first. If you add too many affiliate links you can seriously slow the progress of your site ranking. I normally wait until I am on about page 3 or 4 before I insert the affiliate links. I know that this is how you will be making money, but you won’t be making any money on page 3 or 4 anyway.

The other thing you want to remember is not to have too many affiliate links on your money site. I try to keep the main pages I am trying to rank to under 10 affiliate links (or there abouts). It is also important to realise that Google Panda is on the lookout for affiliate websites to penalise, so ensure that you only have 25% of your sites pages that include affiliate links. 25% is conservative, but again, it is better to err on the side of caution.

In terms of the secondary pages you are trying to rank, again these pages need to be quality and should be between 1000 and 2000 words of unique quality content.

Note: Every couple of weeks you should be trying to post at least 1 new page of content. Google doesn’t like putting new sites on the front page unless they have a lot of content. In my experience you need at least 15 to 20 pages of content on your website before you will seriously start to rank and look like an authority in a niche.

I normally like to do 1 main money page, then 5 or 6 supporting pages, 1 new money page, 5 or 6 supporting pages. It just helps to keep everything nice and even and also fills out your site so that you don’t end up with too many money pages.

Keywords in Articles

When it comes to writing articles, try to target specific keywords on each page. So if you were hitting Best Electric Razor, you should make sure that best electric razor is somewhere in your title. You would also want to make sure that the entire page mentions best electric razor at least 1% of the time and that it is included in one or two headings.

Speaking of headings, be sure to use them! On each page you should be using at least 3 or 4 headings using the H2 tag, or even the H3 tag if there are sub headings. I tend not to use the H1 tag as it can sometimes conflict with the title tag on some themes.

For your main pages, be sure to only use Pages, not posts. Posts, tend to lose their rankings faster as they have dates attached to them, so money content needs to site on pages. Infact, your entire site could be done on pages if you want, i’m not a big fan of posts lately.

WordPress Admin Set-up

In terms of back end set-up, there is a bit of work to do there.

  1. You need to install plugins like
    1. Yoast SEO
    2. Contact Form 7 (or equivalent)
    3. Ultimate Nofollow (this is for your affiliate links)
    4. W3 Total Cache(speed up your site)
    5. Some sort of SPAM blocker – I use Anti-Captcha
  2. With Yoast, you need to setup a few things like change your Robots.txt, create an XML sitemap, and exclude media, portfolio, category, tags and Format post types and taxonomies
I use the following in my robots.txt
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Disallow: /category
    Disallow: /category/
    Disallow: /tag
    Disallow: /tag/
    Disallow: /archives

    Disallow: /archives/
    Disallow: /author
    Disallow: /author/
    Disallow: /cgi-bin/
    Disallow: /archives
    Disallow: /comments/feed/
    Disallow: /trackback/
    Disallow: /comment/reply/
    Disallow: /comment/
    Disallow: /useronline/
    Disallow: /home/Allow: /
  3. In the settings / General you will need to set a Title and a Tagline. Then in Permalinks you should select Post name. Note: This is really important, do not leave it as default.

The main thing you need to concern yourself with at this point in time is getting great content on your site and making sure relevant pages in your silos are linking to each other. Once you have lots of content and are ranking, then you can worry about the look and feel of the site.

Handy Hints:

  • Don’t write your article in word and copy it across! Always write your article in wordpress.
  • Don’t use tags
  • Link like topics via categories or parent pages.
  • use nofollow links for affiliate links.
